AIR listening to ports – Time to speak up!!

Filed under: AIR, Adobe — Wrote by Campbell on Friday, August 10th, 2007 @ 1:11 pm

Saw this over on ApolloCoders mailing list:

Q: " I know this is probably a stretch, but can an AIR app bind tcp ports
and listen for requests?  I know outgoing socket connections are
available."

A: "No, it cannot. That is being considered for a future release.

This is the major hold back of true P2P apps for the flash player(AIR platform). It is something I have been wishing for, for a while now, and I know many others have been too. Time to speak up and let Adobe know. Leave a comment on here or ping the ApolloCoders mailing list :)

*Steps down off soapbox and gives back to Scott Barnes*

UPDATE: "…this isn't possible with AIR, and isn't planned for 1.0." Christian Cantrell

Seems we wont have it in time for christmas :( Hope Oliver did get in trouble, I just like to quote my sources properly. If you did Oliver I owe you some beers ;)

“that is being considered for a future release.”

so apart from pinging Ted Patrick personally, hassling them on the (_North_America_only_) OnAIR bus tour or adding “me too” to the Apollocoders thread, how else can one cast a “vote”?

    as for Scott:

he seems to have mellowed in his Microsoft old age.

Once upon a time you’d cringe thinking “he’s gonna get sacked for sure” – like being at the car track hanging out for the crashes… but like a cat with nine lives get through it.

in fact, in a recent thread on CFAussie, he was the voice of reason trying to calm a couple of hot-heads. Very unlike him.

Perhaps Ipswich City Council is putting something in the water? or maybe it’s the Microsoft Cool-aid he drinks…

    Hahaha nice Barry!

Perhaps we can start a “Give the AIR developers beer” fund and when we have enough to get the team “tipsy” we sit them down and get it added while under the influence.
    I pledge a dozen.

Actually I think Scott is a great guy(from my little contact), and he has had more effect on the course/discourse of things in adobe than most give him credit for, but totally relate to the car crash metaphor. :)
